    <title>Theoretical Issues in Psychology An Introduction second edition</title>
    <link>http://localhost:8080/xmlui/handle/123456789/180</link>
    <description>Title: Theoretical Issues in Psychology An Introduction second edition
Authors: Bem, Sacha; Looren de Jong, Huib
Abstract: The material is now spread over ten&#xD;
chapters, and we have reworked, expanded, and thoroughly updated the text. The two&#xD;
main theoretical issues in psychology, on science (the nature of scientific psychology)&#xD;
and mind, and its all-over structure, though, have been maintained – theoretical concepts&#xD;
of science (Chapters 1 and 2); the classical philosophy of science in a light historical&#xD;
presentation, that is, positivism and its critics (Chapter 3); the ensuing&#xD;
discussion about the reliability of science in terms of the realism–relativism debate&#xD;
(Chapter 4); and the social and psychological context of science (Chapter 5). This&#xD;
concludes the first half of the book.&#xD;
The second part starts with an introductory chapter on philosophy of cognition&#xD;
and mind (Chapter 6). Cognitive psychology started as a linguistic and logic-centred&#xD;
venture – mind as an abstract system of so-called ‘mental language’ (Chapter 7). In&#xD;
the next chapter (Chapter 8) brain-centred approaches to mind questioning the biological&#xD;
plausibility of the linguistic approach are examined. From the beginning the&#xD;
cognitive approach was criticized for its general confinement of mind to internal&#xD;
processes; in the next chapter (Chapter 9), therefore, the main proposals for extending&#xD;
mind beyond the individual are reviewed. In the last chapter (Chapter 10) some&#xD;
central concepts of mind and science are revisited.
